Before placing a product on the Community market, the manufacturer must subject the product to a conformity assessment procedure provided for in the applicable directive, with the view to affixing the CE marking. Thus, the CE marking is, in particular, an indication that the products comply with the essential requirements of applicable directives and that the products have been subject to a conformity assessment procedure provided for in the directives. Further, Member States are obliged to take appropriate measures to protect the CE marking.
